DOVER — It looks like fans will have to wait a few more days for the scoop on this year’s Firefly Music Festival.
After organizers said the lineup would drop this week, Firefly fans held their breath — until Friday afternoon, when the festival team said there had been a hitch in the plans.
“Firefly Fam — we were very confident we’d be able to announce the lineup to you all this week. We’re sorry, but we won’t be able to share today,” stated a post on the Firefly Music Festival Facebook page late in the afternoon.
“We’re waiting on some final approvals that are taking longer than expected. It’ll be worth the wait and we will share the lineup with you as soon as we can.”
There is a silver lining. For every day until the lineup comes out, the post promised to randomly give away up to 10 tickets.
Organizers already teased a portion of the lineup Sunday during the Firefly First Look concert in Philadelphia.
In addition to Chiddy Bang and Cheerleader, who played the First Look event, officials confirmed Elliphant, Run the Jewels, Spoon, Empire of the Sun and Bastille are set to perform at the Woodlands of Dover International Speedway.
While fans wait for the rest of the list, though, rumors are running rampant.
A post on the fan-run Bonnaroo message board Inforoo alleged that music icon Paul McCartney along with rock bands The Killers and Kings of Leon are slated to headline.
And Jan. 23, Twitter user EDMsecrets leaked a line-up that included the same headliners, along with likes of singer Morrissey, rock group Foster the People and rapper Snoop Dogg (otherwise known as Snoop Lion).
But only time will tell whether the rumors are true.
Earlier this month, Greg Bostrom, the director of the festival, posted some background about how organizers put together the lineup.
The short answer: It’s not easy. They’re tasked to balance 120 tour schedules and find the right place on the bill for each artist.
“The overall lineup puzzle is simultaneously exciting and maddening,” Mr. Bostrom wrote.
“Sometimes our top choices decide to go to Europe during Firefly,. Other times acts that seem impossible at the beginning of booking come through in the final days before lineup announce.”
He added that organizers are always on the hunt for new music and pour over surveys responses. They’re avid readers of message boards, Twitter mentions and Facebook comments, he said.
“…[W]e keep you at the center of all our decisions,” he wrote.
Firefly Music Festival is slated for June 18-21 in its fourth year at the Woodlands of Dover International Speedway.
The four-day festival, which is run by Red Frog Events from Chicago, drew about 80,000 fans to Dover in 2014, when Jack Johnson, Foo Fighters and Outkast were the headliners.
