BEAR – The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a multi-vehicle crash which has claimed the life of a Dover, DE woman that occurred this morning in Bear.
The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred this morning, Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at approximately 7:17 a.m., as Joseph Keyes, 66, of Dover, DE, was operating a 2008 Honda Accord and was traveling in a northbound direction on US Rt. 13 (S. DuPont Highway) north of DE Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road) at an apparent high rate of speed. Keyes then attempted to swerve his vehicle to the left in an attempt to avoid striking a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, which was being operated by John E. Bennett, 57, of Townsend, DE, and which was slowing in the left hand northbound lane. Keyes’ vehicle struck the left rear of the Silverado and then sideswiped the left side of a 2003 Honda Accord, which was being operated by Doreen S. Wilson, 56, of Bear, DE, and which was slowing directly in front of the Silverado.
Keyes’ vehicle then left the west edge of the roadway and began traveling northbound in the grass median toward the intersection of Hamburg Road, still at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then re-entered the northbound lanes of US Rt. 13, where it struck the driver’s side of a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 which was being operated by Antonio D. Blackwell, 45, of New Castle, DE, and which was stopped in the left turn lane of US Rt. 13 at Hamburg Road. The impact of the collision caused Keyes’ vehicle and the Dodge Ram into the intersection where they then struck a 2010 Dodge Challenger, which was being operated by David S. Wilson, 40, of Bear, DE, as well as a 2010 Chrysler 300, which was being operated by Richard P. Thomas, 56, of Bear, and which were both traveling in an eastbound direction through the intersection.
Catherine A. Keyes, 61, who was a passenger in her husband’s vehicle, and who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Joseph Keyes was removed from the scene by Emergency Medical Services and transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he is being treated for his serious injuries.
Antonio Blackwell, David Wilson, and Richard Thomas, who were all properly restrained at the time of the crash, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. John Bennett and Doreen Wilson were not injured.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Alcohol and the road conditions at the time of the crash do not appear to be contributing factors.
US Rt. 13 northbound at Hamburg Road was closed for approximately 4 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
