DOVER — A 24-year-old man who was slightly injured by a shotgun blast early Wednesday morning in the Simon Circle area may have been targeted by an unidentified suspect, Dover Police said.
Police said the victim suffered minor injuries to his face and hands when the shotgun was fired from a nearby vehicle passing by at approximately 12:05 a.m.
“Based on the victim’s statement it does not seem to be a random act, but that is still being investigated,” said police spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman.”
The wounded man returned fire with a legally owned handgun he was openly carrying and the vehicle sped away, police said.
The incident unfolded when a vehicle with a shotgun-wielding passenger first traveled past the victim standing by the Simon Circle Community Building in the 900 block of West North Street, police said,
“The victim stated that he took cover and watched the vehicle travel towards the entrance of Simon Circle when the passenger shot at him,” Cpl. Hoffman said.
Also, Cpl. Hoffman said, “we believe ‘birdshot’ was used and he was struck in the hands and face.”
The victim was treated for injuries at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover.
No vehicle description was available on Wednesday morning, police said. It was unknown if surveillance video was available or bystanders were in the vicinity at time of the exchange.
There was no information available on possible property damage, according to authorities.
