It took a while for Smyrna High’s boys’ basketball program to make its first appearance in the DIAA state championship game.

But the Eagles made the most of the opportunity once they got there.

Smyrna battled past Caravel, 61-53, in the state finals at the Carpenter Center to capture its first state crown in the sport.

The victory capped off a 23-2 season for the Eagles and made them the first Henlopen Conference team to win the state championship since 1997.

Photographer Marc Clery captured the moment for the Delaware State News.
