SMYRNA — The opening of any new business can be scary.

Dawn and James Hobbs are sure to get that feeling two-fold when they open Bootlegger’s Bar & Grill at 4793 Wheatley’s Pond Road in Smyrna with a Halloween party on Saturday night.

“We’ll celebrate our grand opening with a Halloween party on October 28, but hopefully that won’t be the first night,” said Mrs. Hobbs, who owns the new tavern along with her husband. “We are hoping to have a soft opening before that, but we’re not sure when just yet.”

The Halloween party will take place Saturday night at from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. and will feature The Mixx Unplugged, a cover band that has been playing in the Middletown area for the past decade, as well as a DJ.

The grand opening of Bootlegger’s has been one that has taken perseverance and a while to reach.

Mrs. Hobbs believes her patience will pay off when customers finally get a chance to see the bar, with its aqua-blue walls and a fountain in the main room. The business also has an outdoor-seating area for when the weather is pleasant.

“I just wanted something more laid back and a place where people can hang out and be comfortable,” she said. “We just want it to be about comfort and friends. I want it to be a very friendly place.”

Bootlegger’s is still in the process of finalizing its menu after encountering some difficulties it encountered with its taproom license.

The business will offer customers plenty to do, including cornhole outside with dart boards and a pool table inside. There’s even a stream that runs behind the bar that contains fish, though a fishing tournament is not currently in the plans.

So, how did the new tavern receive its’ name “Bootlegger’s?”

“I recall seeing the reflection of my car in a gas station window one day and it kind of looked like the General Lee from the old “Dukes of Hazzard” TV show,” Mrs. Hobbs said. “It made me think of the old bootleggers in the south, so we decided to go with that name.”
