New Business: ShopRite looking to expand in Dover

DOVER — ShopRite may be the answer when it comes to filling the large empty retail space at the south end of the North Dover Center, which was vacated by Acme at the beginning of June.

ShopRite officials said they are looking at that location, as well as three others in Dover, as a possible future location for a grocery store.

“We are interested in expanding into Dover and always looking for new opportunities to better serve communities with ShopRite stores, but we have nothing confirmed at this time.,” said Karen O’Shea, a spokesman for ShopRite.

If ShopRite, a northern New Jersey-based cooperative, should decide to come to Dover, it will be the company’s first foray into central Delaware.

Out with the old

The old Acme store had been a Dover mainstay since 1989. At the time of the closing, Acme spokeswoman Dana Ward noted that it was one of the three stores in the region being eliminated.

“Acme Markets announced in April that it plans to close its stores in Lansdale and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and Dover,” she said at the time.

The market chain said the Dover location at 1001 N. DuPont Highway is one that was falling short of their expectations.

“Closing a store is always a tough decision, which is not made without a great deal of consideration,” said Ms. Ward. “Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating our store portfolio and have to look at every angle of the business.

“These stores have not met our goals for a number of years and we have made the decision to deploy the teams and resources to other locations to serve our customers.

“ACME is focused on growing our business and reinvesting those resources into other locations and aggressively exploring new sites.”

ACME now has 19 locations remaining in the state (some of which are Safeways, also owned by the market chain).
