MILTON — On Saturday night during a performance by Sean Reilly and The Centennial Sinatra Orchestra at The Milton Theatre, Cheswold police officer Louis Simms proposed to his girlfriend Katie Bird.

Before singing “Just The Way You Look Tonight,” Mr. Reilly walked into the audience and selected a “girl to sing the song to”.

Unbeknownst to Ms. Bird, who was seated beside Officer Simms, Mr. Reilly asked them both to come up on stage.

About halfway through the song while Mr. Reilly was singing to Ms. Bird with Officer Simms behind her, the Cheswold policeman dropped to one knee. The band stopped playing mid-tune.

The audience gasped in surprise and then burst out in applause once they understood the moment.

Ms. Bird is a dental assistant in Dover. The wedding date is to be determined.
