DOVER –– The 30th installment of the Southern Delaware Heart Ball is mixing things up, holding it outdoors for the first time.

The black-tie event has always been held in a hotel ballroom but this year will be held under a tent on Legislative Mall.

“We wanted to highlight the capital city and the beauty downstate has to offer,” said event chair Katie Kramedas.

The Ball is entitled “An Affair to Remember” and will follow the theme of Hollywood Glamour so guests are encouraged to don their most red carpet worthy attire.

Upon entering the tent, guests will walk down a Hollywood Star Walk.

To customize a star for the Walk, attendees can sign up on the event website for $50. At the end of the evening, the star can be taken home.

Under the tent, guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres and food stations catered by Nage and a beer and wine garden stocked with the finest spirits Kent and Sussex have to offer.

Attendees will be able to kick off their night with drinks and light hors d’oeuvres and a walk around silent auction tables featuring items donated from local businesses.

Items up for auction range from signed jerseys and spa packages to a vacation to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and a pair of custom-designed diamond and ruby earrings.

“All of the proceeds go to the American Heart Association but will be used locally –– in Kent and Sussex counties,” Ms. Kramedas said.

Dancing will follow the silent auction to live music and a DJ. Table games will also be offered where casino games like black jack can be played, each sponsored by a different local business.

Every year the event is packed with local supporters of the American Heart Association and this year is no different –– less than 100 tickets are still available.

“The American Heart Association is such a great organization,” Ms. Kramedas said. “It’s personally impacted me because my grandfather struggled with heart disease for four years and they kept coming out with new research that was able to keep him alive. And I know I’m not the only one in the area who’s seen the impact of their work.”

The 2016 Southern Delaware Heart Ball is April 23 on Legislative Mall from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $150 each and available by phone at 286-5723 or online at southerndeheartball.heart.org.
