5-year-old Dover girl who wandered away found safe

DOVER — A 5-year-old girl was found wandering in the area of U.S. 13 and Cedar Chase Apartments/Exxon late Tuesday morning, Dover Police said.

The child’s mother was located after Dover PD posted the child’s photo and some information on Facebook to aid the search.

That quickly prompted 118 comments and 1,700 shares by around 11:30 a.m.

In one comment a mother posted that her son had played with the missing child just a few days earlier and knew which part of the apartment complex the child came from.

The mother contacted her son for more details as other posts urged to contact Dover Police as soon as possible.

Another poster urged residents to knock on every door in the apartment complex.

Most comments opined that children can go missing quickly even with attentive adult supervision, and others prayed and hoped for a positive resolution.

Another post recalled a time when a boy too young to talk was spotted walking with a bag and wearing a diaper only.

Police were called and it was determined that the child was being watched by a family friend while both parents were at work, according to the post.

Another comment recalled being charged with endangering the welfare of a child when her niece wandered out of the house while everyone was sleeping.

Thankfully, according to the post, the girl was found unharmed near the highway.

Dover Police also received positive credit by working to keep the girl safe and then locate the parent.
