Changing of the year calls for celebrations

DOVER — The blank page of a new year sits in front of everybody with a wide variety of resolutions and goals starting on Monday.

However, Sunday night will be a different story altogether.

That’s when Delaware joins the world in revelry as it says goodbye to 2017 and flips the calendar to 2018 at midnight amidst champagne toasts, noisemakers, kisses and warm wishes.

There is just about something for everyone who wants to head out and celebrate the new year in Kent and Sussex counties.

While Times Square in New York City has its famous Ball Drop, visitors to The Circle in Georgetown will watch the town raise its ball on Sunday night.

Lewes will be a busy place on Sunday as there be an anchor drop in the Lewes Canal, a day-long family-flavored celebration at Winter WonderFEST at the Lewes Ferry Terminal and a Keg Drop at the Crooked Hammock Brewery near Lewes that night.

Dover-area families and kids will get the chance to celebrate the new year a day earlier.

The Friends of Kent County Public Library will be celebrating their always popular annual Winter Carnival today from 9 a.m. until noon and the Kent County Recreation Center will be getting in on the action with its own New Year’s event from noon until 4 p.m.

As usual, restaurants and taverns will be celebrating New Year’s Eve in their own ways, many with bands or DJs.

Keep an eye on those scheduled outside events, as predicted temperatures of 12 degrees on Sunday night already canceled the Dewey Beach Ball Drop.
And, as Mark Twain once said, don’t take the changing of the year too seriously.

“New Year’s Day … now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions,” he said. “Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”

With those words of wisdom in mind, here is a roundup of some New Year’s celebrations scheduled for today and Sunday in Kent and Sussex counties:
