Construction lane closures to be suspended for Memorial Day weekend

DOVER — In an effort to help try to ease Memorial Day weekend traffic, the Delaware Department of Transportation will be suspending planned construction-related lane closures from Thursday until May 31.

Ongoing sustained lane shifts and/or lane closures may still be in effect in certain areas. DelDOT reminds travelers to exercise caution as heavy holiday traffic is expected. Emergency lane closures may occur at any time on interstate and state routes.

The suspension of the planned construction-related lane closures will take place from 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and will last until 12:01 a.m. on May 31.

In an effort to get as much information as possible on traffic conditions throughout Delaware around Memorial Day, DelDOT suggests that motorists check out:

Transportation Management Center: DelDOT’s Transportation Management Center and WTMC-1380 AM provides motorists real-time traffic conditions throughout the state.

Motorists can contact the TMC 24/7 to report any travel or traffic related issues at the following numbers: Dial #77 from any cell phone; (302) 659-4600; or 1-800-324-8379.

DelDOT’s App: Motorists may adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple and Android smart phones and tablets and can be downloaded free. Just search for “DelDOT” at the Apple and Google Play stores.

With the DelDOT App motorists can view real time traffic cameras, travel times, delays, advisories, DART’s Real-Time Transit Information and also listen to WTMC 1380 AM.

Rest Stops: Motorists looking for a break can visit the Delaware Welcome Center Travel Plaza on I-95 near Newark or the Smyrna Rest Area on Del. 1, Exit 119 or U.S. 13 near Smyrna.

DART: DART’s Route 305, Beach Connection provides a relaxing ride from Wilmington to Rehoboth Beach on Friday nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Monday, Sept. 4.

Route 305 stops include the Wilmington Train Station, Christiana Mall, Odessa Park & Ride on Del. 299 just off of Del. 1 in Middletown, Scarborough Road Park & Ride in Dover, new Lewes Park & Ride and the Rehoboth Park & Ride.

The Beach Connection is a motor coach offering 45 seats, two wheelchair positions, along with under coach storage compartments for beach gear and luggage.

This summer, the fare has been lowered to $2 per zone. The one-way cash fare from Wilmington is $10; $8 from Middletown; and $6 from Dover.

Riders are encouraged to buy an “Anywhere” daily pass for $12.60, which can also be used on all beach bus services connecting at either of the Park & Rides.

DART’s beach bus services operate daily, serving Rehoboth Beach and the boardwalk, Lewes, Long Neck, Dewey Beach, Ruddertowne, Bethany Beach, South Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island and Ocean City, Maryland.

The service operates from around 7 a.m. until 2 a.m. All buses are air-conditioned, ADA-accessible, and equipped with bike racks.

DART now offers two Park & Rides, one in Rehoboth Beach off of Del. 1 on Shuttle Road, just north of the entrance to Rehoboth Avenue. The parking rate is $10 per car per day and includes up to four free daily passes.

Plus, the new Lewes Park & Ride farther north on Del. 1 offers free parking. The one-way cash fare is $2 or ride all day long with a daily pass for $4.20.

The Delaware Transit Corporation, a subsidiary of DelDOT, operates DART First State. DART’s Real-Time Transit Information is free on DelDOT’s App.

E-ZPass: The E-ZPass express lanes are open at I-95 Newark Toll Plaza; Biddle’s Toll Plaza on Del. 1 and Dover Plaza on Del. 1, as well as most of the other cash toll booth lanes at the plazas.

Additional lanes will be opened as needed. Motorists are reminded to slow down when approaching the toll plazas to ensure the safety of toll collectors.

Motorists can obtain an E-ZPass account online at www.ezpassde.com and click on “Get E-ZPass.”

Customers can also register for an E-ZPass account in person at any Toll Plaza Customer Service Center 24 hours a day or call 1-888-397-2773 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
