FREDERICA — Wesley College is well aware of the attention the DE Turf multipurpose sports complex has been attracting in its inaugural year.

That’s the main reason why Wesley decided to jump on board and partner with DE Turf, electing to sponsor one of the dozen fields that make up the complex – now known as Wesley’s Field One.

“This partnership is a win-win for everyone,” Wesley College President Robert E. Clark II said. “We are excited to have a field that our students can utilize when not being used in competition by teams from around the region and nation.

“Additionally, this is a great branding opportunity for our college and community.”

Wesley College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at DE Turf last Tuesday.

Members of the community, elected officials, board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, Wesley’s mascot Wally the Wolverine, and coaches were on hand to officially acknowledge the partnership between the two organizations.

“The Wesley College field and this amazing facility will help make Delaware a prized sports destination, contributing to the tourism industry as well as offering a state-of-the-art sports venue for local, regional, and national athletes,” Mr. Clark said.

The future of field hockey

Wesley College will also be involved at DE Turf next spring when the facility will serve as the Delaware location for USA Field Hockey’s Futures Program on March 11, March 18, April 8 and May 6, 2018.

The Delaware Futures Program in Delaware has previously been hosted at the University of Delaware and, most recently, Wesley College. The program served multiple athletes in 2017.

Training is led by Wesley College field hockey assistant coach Jill Dixon. Next spring will be the first time the program will be held at DE Turf.

The Futures Program offers an opportunity for athletes who want to sharpen their field hockey skills in the off-season, allowing them to work toward their dream to play at a higher level.

“The Futures Program is a tremendous opportunity for youth athletes to receive quality off-season training from some of Delaware’s best coaches,” said Chris Giacomucci, executive director at DE Turf.

“Providing opportunities to young athletes is part of our mission statement, so that is what attracted us to team up with Wesley College on this program.”

Thankful for football

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks, gather together with family … and a time to play and watch football.

Mr. Giacomucci said DE Turf will be open from 9 a.m. until noon on Thanksgiving Day and the two days after for families or groups of friends that are interested in renting a field for their pre-dinner football festivities.

Fields can be reserved at deturf.com/rent. Fields must be reserved by Monday.

“DE Turf is built for tourism but is community-driven,” Mr. Giacomucci said. “We want to be an athletic home for our community and we enjoy getting the chance to open our doors to them.”
