Update: Del. 1 reopens between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach

Update – DelDOT announced that lanes are now open on Del. 1 northbound and southbound.

DEWEY BEACH – The Delaware Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that for the safety of motorists, a breach in the dunes near Conquest Road has occurred and Del. 1 northbound and southbound (Cullen Bridge over Indian River Inlet) is closed between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach.

A northbound detour from Bethany follows Del. 26 westbound to U.S. 113 northbound onto Del. 24 eastbound and return to Del. 1. The detour southbound leaves Del. 1 at Del. 24 in Rehoboth Beach and heads westbound onto U.S. 113 southbound to Del. 26 eastbound and back to Del. 1.

The posting will be in effect until the water has receded to a safe travel level, DelDOT said.

DelDOT advised motorists to drive with caution on roads, pay attention to barricades, and do not drive through standing water. If a flooded roadway is seen ahead, DelDOT said, motorists should turn around and take an alternate route to a destination.

DelDOT encouraged drivers to call the following numbers to report any travel or traffic related issues: Dial #77 from any cell phone in Delaware; (302) 659-4600 or 1-800-324-8379. Dial 911 for emergencies.
