DelDOT prepares for busy Memorial Day weekend

DOVER — The Delaware Department of Transportation has announced its plans for what is expected to be a heavy holiday traffic Memorial Day weekend.

DelDOT will be suspending construction-related lane closures at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, until 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. Ongoing sustained lane shifts and/or lane closures may still be in effect in certain areas. Emergency lane and/or shoulder closures may occur at any time on the interstate and state routes.

In Georgetown, motorists are advised that the Circle will be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, to honor veterans for Memorial Day.

Meanwhile, in Dewey Beach, the right lane will be closed on Del. 1 southbound from Dickinson Street to New Road from 7:15 a.m. until 8 a.m. on Monday, May 27, for the safety of runners/walkers participating in the 17th Highway One Company 5K in memory of Doug White.

DelDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) and WTMC 1380 AM provides motorists real-time traffic conditions throughout the state. Motorists can contact the TMC 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to report any travel or traffic related issues at the following numbers: Dial #77 from cell phone in Delaware; (302) 659-4600; or 1-800-324-8379.

Motorists may also adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple amd Android smart phones and tablets. The DelDOT App can be downloaded for free, just search for “DelDOT” at the Apple and Google Play stores. With the DelDOT App, motorists will be able to view real time traffic cameras, travel times, delays, advisories, DART’s Real-Time Transit Information. Traffic information and updates can also be heard on WTMC 1380 AM.

Motorists looking for a break can visit the Biden Welcome Center on I-95 near Newark or the Smyrna Rest Area on Del. 1, Exit 119 or U.S. 13 near Smyrna.

DART’s Route 305, Beach Connection provides a relaxing ride from Wilmington to Rehoboth Beach on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Monday, September 2. Route 305 stops in-clude the Wilmington Train Station, Christiana Mall, Odessa Park and Ride on Route 299 just off Del. 1 in Middletown, Scarborough Road Park and Ride in Dover, Lewes Park and Ride and the Rehoboth Park and Ride.

The Beach Connection is a comfortable motor coach offering 45 seats, two wheelchair positions, along with under coach storage compartments for beach gear and luggage. This summer, the fare has been lowered to just $2 per zone. The one-way cash fare from Wilmington is $10; $8 from Middletown; and $6 from Dover. Riders are encouraged to buy an “Anywhere” Daily Pass for $12.60, which can also be used on all Beach Bus Services connecting at either of the Park and Rides.

DART’s Beach Bus Services operate daily, serving Rehoboth Beach and the boardwalk, Lewes, Long Neck, Dewey Beach, Ruddertowne, Bethany Beach, South Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island and Ocean City, Maryland. The service operates from around 7 a.m. until 2 a.m. All buses are air-conditioned, ADA accessible and equipped with bike racks.

Visitors and residents are encouraged to use one of DART’s Park and Ride lots. The Lewes Park and Ride is located on Coastal Highway, just south of Five Points where parking is free, and the bus fare is paid upon boarding.

The Rehoboth Park and Ride is located off Del. 1 on Shuttle Road, just north of the entrance to Rehoboth Avenue. The parking rate is $10 per car per day and includes up to four free daily bus passes. For customers catching the bus at one of the many bus stops, the one-way cash fare is $2, ride all day long with a daily pass for $4.20, or weekly passes for $18 and monthly passes for $65 are also available.

With the free DART Transit app, riders can plan their trip, view bus stops, get real-time bus information, and see where the bus is along its route. And, for faster boarding and convenience, riders can pay their fare from their phone with DART Pass mobile payment.

The E-ZPass Express Lanes are open at U.S. 301; I-95 Newark Toll Plaza; Biddles Toll Plaza on Del. 1; and Dover Plaza on Del. 1. Motorists are reminded to slow down when approaching the toll plazas, to ensure the safety of the toll collectors.

Motorists can obtain an E-ZPass account online at and click on “Get E-ZPass.” Cus-tomers can also register for an E-ZPass account in person at any Toll Plaza Customer Service Center 24 hours a day or call 1-888-397-2773 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. weekdays, and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
