Dover man pleads guilty to 2nd-degree murder in 2017 shooting in Milford

DOVER — A Dover man potentially faces life in prison after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge for summer of 2017 shooting at a Milford apartment complex.

Don R. Martinez will learn his sentencing fate on Feb. 1 for the death of Ellendale resident Kevin M. King, 36. Milford Police said at the time that the men were involved in an altercation at Silver Lake Estates apartment complex that led to Mr. King being shot multiple times. Martinez was 34 years old at the time.

A mandatory minimum of 26 years incarceration is required for the murder count, combined with convictions for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by person prohibited. Second-degree assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony were not further prosecuted.

Superior Court President Judge Jan R. Jurden questioned Mr. Martinez extensively before determining that the plea was made knowingly and willingly.

Mr. King was found dead near Del. 10 in a vehicle Martinez drove the scene. Dover Police and Delaware State Police located the vehicle. Martinez was arrested shortly afterward and held on $1,000,000 cash only bail, according to authorities.

A 31-year-old man was also struck by gunfire during the incident and was treated and released from Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
