Dover Police Chief selection committee meeting Wednesday

DOVER — Public comment is welcome at the first Dover Police Chief selection committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Robin Christiansen and four other city officials will gather in the City Hall Council Chambers at 3 p.m. to discuss the process of finding a replacement for now-retired Paul Bernat, with the goal of naming a new police chief by the end of April.

In an agenda announcing the meeting, the City of Dover asked that, if possible, anyone wishing to speak to notify the city clerk at 736-7008 or cityclerk@dover.de.us.

The committee reserves the right to move to a closed session if personnel and/or legal issues arise.

Deputy Chief Maj. Marvin Mailey has been overseeing the department since Mr. Bernat left the post on Jan. 17.

Other committee members include City Council President Timothy A. Slavin , Councilman and Safety Advisory and Transportation Committee Chairman James Hosfelt, City Manager Scott Koenig and City Human Resources Director Kim Hawkins.

Mayor Christiansen said the hope is to post a job listing as soon as possible. The search is designed to be nationwide, he said, while noting that there are strong candidates within the Dover Police Department as well.

After upcoming discussions with the committee the mayor will eventually present a candidate before city council, which will vote on approval.
