Downstate events to remember 9/11

DOVER — Several groups will hold events today to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Air Mobility Command

Dover Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Air Mobility Command Museum located at 1301 Heritage Road, Dover Air Force Base, today at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be conducted at the 9/11 memorial on the south side of the museum.

This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Ben Carson. The public is invited and base credentials are not required. The museum gate is located off of Del. 9.

The community is encouraged to come out and pay respect to those lost on that day.

9/11 Memorial Blood Drive

Dover International Speedway will pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with the annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino Diamond Rooms. This marks the 13th consecutive year that Dover International Speedway, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino and the Blood Bank of Delmarva have partnered for this event, dating back to 2006.

In appreciation to all who register this year, each person will receive a pair of general admission tickets to the Saturday, Oct. 6 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff Race at Dover International Speedway.

9/11 Patriots Day Ceremony

The town of Georgetown will host the 9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony “We Will Never Forget” on Sept. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Georgetown Little League Park located at East Market Street in Georgetown. For more information, call (302) 856-7391.

Town of Smyrna ceremony

The town of Smyrna will come together as a community to remember Sept. 11, 2001, and honor those who gave their lives. The ceremony will take place in front of the Citizens’ Hose Company No. 1 fire station, 103 W. Commerce St., and will begin promptly at 7 p.m. A candlelight vigil honoring America’s first responders will conclude the ceremony.

CHEER to host military day

Honoring those who died in the 9/11 terrorists attack, CHEER again will host a Military Honor Day on Sept. 11 to educate the public about U.S. Armed Forces.

This patriotic event will be held at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen, Jr. CHEER Community Center, located at Sand Hill Road and U.S. 9, east of Georgetown. Activities take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and admission is free to the public.

Students from area schools are invited to attend and visit the educational displays highlighting historical military events in American history.

Students will have the opportunity to meet veterans of American wars and conflicts and share their experiences and memories of the event.
