Ex-tennis instructor scheduled for plea hearing in sex-related case

Carl Fennell

DOVER — A 73-year-old Dover man is scheduled for an afternoon plea hearing today regarding an alleged sex offense with a minor he was mentoring in tennis nearly 30 years ago.

On Aug. 6, Carl D. Fennell was indicted on 10 counts of felony unlawful sexual intercourse allegedly tied to a then 14-year-old female who contacted Dover Police in July about alleged incidents.

The woman, now 43 years old, claimed that between July 1989 and May 1990, Mr. Fennell transported her to the Delaware Technical Community College tennis courts at 100 Campus Drive in Dover. Mr. Fennell was accused of having the female perform sexual acts on him in a vehicle, Dover Police said at the time.

The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Deputy Attorney General Kathleen Dickerson is prosecuting the case for the state and attorney John R. Garey is representing Mr. Fennell.
