Five Kent motorists face felony drunken driving charges

DOVER — Five Kent County motorists were arrested on felony drunken driving charges over a four-day span including Labor Day weekend, police said in court documents.

• The sequence began last Friday when Christopher A. Underwood, 58, of Hartly, was charged with a fifth offense DUI, drivers’ license suspended or revoked and improper lane change. After an appearance at Justice of the Peace Court 3 in Georgetown, his case was transferred to the Kent County Court of Common Pleas in Dover.

• Cheswold Police were working Saturday on the Office of Highway Safety Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Initiative when pulling over a black Chevrolet Tahoe that swerved over the right shoulder of the road and over-corrected to the left at approximately 10:20 p.m.

Police first saw the vehicle in the area of Del. 42 and Main Street and made a stop on southbound U.S. 13. Vernon Alston, 68, of Camden, was allegedly unable focus and slurred his speech, police claimed, and could not complete field sobriety tests when removed from his vehicle.

Mr. Alston refused to take a breath test after transport to the Smyrna Police Department, authorities claimed. A search warrant for a blood test was obtained, police said, and blood was drawn by a nurse at the Bayhealth-Smyrna Emergency Center.

According to police, Mr. Alston had three previous DUI convictions in Delaware and two in Maryland. He was charged with a sixth offense DUI of alcohol and failure to remain in a single lane. He was arraigned at JP Court 7 in Dover and held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna on $6,150 secured bond.

• At approximately 8:09 p.m. Sunday, Carol D. Russ, 51, of Bridgeville, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Sports Van that struck a cement culvert and came to a stop at around 8:09 p.m., police said. Ms. Russ was uninjured in the incident on Del. 404 west of Ritchie Lane.

Ms. Russ was charged with fifth offense DUI of alcohol and any drug, driving while suspended or revoked and failure to remain in a single lane. She was arraigned at JP 3 and held at Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle on $5,550 secured bond.

• Jackie R. Taylor, 32, of Dover, was charged with a third offense DUI of alcohol on Sunday. He was also cited for a drivers license suspended or revoked offense and a rear lamps violation.

• On Monday, Brennon A. Fountain, 36, of Milford, was charged with a third offense DUI of alcohol.
