Health inspectors close Milford eatery pending cleanup

MILFORD — Roach infestation — including adults and nymphs —detected Tuesday has forced the closure of the China Taste restaurant in Milford until conditions are corrected, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health.

DPH staff was at the eatery at 28263 Lexus Drive from 11:25 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a routine inspection, according to a report, identifying seven total violations, including two repeat offenses. An imminent health hazard was declared.

An attempt to reach the restaurant for comment Wednesday was unsuccessful, and an answering machine message indicated the business closed for internal repairs, with an apology to customers for any inconvenience.

Besides the roaches, inspection found that improper thawing methods were ongoing, contamination was present during food preparation, storage and display, and non-food contact surfaces were unclean, among other issues, authorities said. Also, toxic substances were not properly identified, stored and used, according to the state.

Raw food was placed over ready to eat food items in a walk-in cooler that was ordered to be reorganized, according to the report. No employee health forms were reportedly accessible either.

Active roaches were seen in the kitchen and register area and both customer bathrooms, the inspection found. Fly paper was seen above a three bowl sink and prep sink, according to the report.

Household pesticides were in use, with white powder detected under tables and against walls, the DPH claimed.

Also, the report said, shrimp was seen thawing in a bucket on the floor under a three bowl sink. Flour was also found on the floor, along with items in the walk-in unit, the state determined.

A licensed pest management spray/service was ordered to be scheduled, and a detailed documented copy of the service required at the next inspection. All roaches — dead and alive — were ordered removed before the next inspection. All equipment was ordered to be cleaned and sanitized following the pest management visit.

No food was allowed to be reordered until the DPH re-opened the establishment.
