DOVER — A preliminary hearing for a Dover man accused in an after-hours shooting death at Towne Point Elementary School last month has been rescheduled for next Friday.

His attorney Joe Hurley said Mr. West was acting in self defense and will plead not guilty to charges against him.

Mr. West had just ended his work shift as a custodian at Towne Point ES when Mr. Combs arrived in a vehicle and a confrontation ensued at approximately10 p.m., Dover Police said in a probable cause affidavit.

Mr. Combs was found with fatal injuries by arriving police officers at the scene at 629 Buckson Drive and pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m., court documents said.

The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, according to a Medical Examiners Office autopsy.

Other charges include possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of firearm in safe school zone.

Mr. West was hired by the Capital School District on Sept. 29, 2014. The district declined to comment on his employment status Friday, citing it as a personnel issue.
