Kent County Recreation Center on schedule for early 2016 opening

DOVER –– The Kent County Recreation Center on New Burton Road in Dover is on budget and on schedule to open in early 2016, according to EDiS’ monthly progress report presented to Levy Court Tuesday night.

Steel erection began Tuesday, the exact date it was scheduled to begin. Vertical steel is already completed on the Boys & Girls Club portion of the facility. Up to this point, the focus of the county’s progress has been site work.

Most the underground work is already completed but some finishing touches remain and will be completed as work on the actual structure progresses.

The goal is to have the Recreation Center fully enclosed before winter at which time work will continue on the interior of the facility

Within the next month, construction will be underway on the turf fields and field house. There has been a delay in the maintenance building because a last-minute switch was made from using a pre-manufactured structure to building one. The change required new permits to be approved.

The project is still well within the $10.7 million budget and a contingency in excess of $700,000 remains for any changes or unforeseen costs.

EDiS reported the county is in a strong position to complete the project on budget.

Levy Court meets next on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at 555 Boy Road in Dover. An agenda will be available online at co.kent.de.us.
