MILLSBORO — Last December, a small army of volunteers placed 1,359 wreaths on graves of military veterans buried in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Several days later, another 766 were placed.

Sadly, not every grave at the cemetery just north of Millsboro received a wreath.

A promotion coinciding with National Military Appreciation Month in May through National Wreaths Across America may greatly enhance the chances that every veteran’s grave this coming December will have a wreath.

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, Wreaths Across America will match every wreath sponsored through a fundraising group in the month of May.

“Let’s take advantage of this generous promotion and make 2019 the year we place a wreath on every veteran’s grave at our Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro,” said Teresa Townsend, location coordinator for National Wreaths Across America Day at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Those wishing to participate in the match fundraising should use Ms. Townsend’s fundraising group ID: #DE0016. Participants may contact Teresa Townsend at 302-278-1916.

“Any individual can sponsor a wreath. It just has to happen through a fundraising group, which is my fundraising: DE0016,” said Ms. Townsend. “So yes, individual sponsors can participate in this.”

Wreaths last year cost $15 each.

The second wreath-placing event last December was needed as there was a shortage on the delivery for the main event held Dec. 15. It brought the total to over 2,100 wreaths.

“This year we will need approximately 3,000 wreaths to cover the cemetery,” said Ms. Townsend. “That is the goal we are working toward.”
