Milford, Harrington events spread holiday cheer this week

The holiday season means fun activities spread out throughout the month of December. Three of those events will take place this week in Harrington and Milford.

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Harrington

The city of Harrington will kick off the festive week Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. with their annual Christmas Tree Lighting held at Freedom Park next to the Harrington Police Department.

The old-fashioned event features music, cookies and hot chocolate, along with fellowship with other community members who are ready to start the holiday celebrations.

14th Annual Holiday Stroll in Milford

More seasonal fun takes place Friday night, Dec. 9, starting with the annual Holiday Stroll in Milford at 5 p.m. along Walnut Street.

Local businesses and organizations prepare crafts, live music and other activities throughout the downtown Milford area for the community-wide event. For example, the Music School of Delaware will debut the Milford Pops Ensemble and host performances by the Milford String Ensemble, Milford Piano Trio and Suzuki Academy Kids.

The Milford Public Library will feature gingerbread ornament crafts for the young at heart and s’mores will be available at the amphitheater outside with a fire pit and wood provided by Causey Mansion Bed & Breakfast and s’more fixings provided by State Representative Bryan Shupe.

Tax Chicks will explore a magical theme for this year’s stroll, offering a free wizard’s wand to the first 500 visitors. The sorting hat will help select the perfect Hogwarts house for adventurous visitors. They can also meet professors of witchcraft and wizardry in-house while exploring the Wizard Express and annual train set-up.

Other activities for children and families will be found at the Mispillion Art League, Wattay Accounting, First Presbyterian Church, The Chronicle, Delaware Tang Soo Do Academy and Lifecycle.

Most businesses in the downtown area will also celebrate the evening with sales or snacks available through 8 p.m. Santa’s house will be open, as well, for visiting children.

Harrington Christmas Parade

In Harrington Friday, Dec. 6, the annual Christmas Parade will step off at 7 p.m., offering a festive, town-wide celebration of their own.

The parade begins at Lake Forest South Elementary School on Dorman Street, winds down the road to Commerce Street before taking parade participants on Milford-Harrington Highway and back to the school.

Santa and Mrs. Claus round out an evening of holiday spirits by announcing their arrival for the season atop the last float of the night.
