Navy Cross recipient heads Kent County Memorial Day event

DOVER — Because of the forecasted heavy rain and possible lightning storm on Memorial Day, the Annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Kent County Veterans Memorial Park has been moved to the Dover firehouse at 103 S. Governor’s avenue and Reed St. at 2 p.m.

Attendees should not park in the fire house parking lot.

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. George Malone will address his fellow Vietnam veterans.

A graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the Amphibious Warfare College, Lt. Col. Malone received numerous military awards, including the Navy Cross, two Purple Heart medals and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

The Navy Cross was awarded to then-2nd Lt. George M. Malone “for extraordinary heroism” while serving as a platoon commander with Company A, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, Third Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam early on the afternoon of 22 February 1969.

Mr. Malone is past president and board member of numerous civic and professional organizations, including the Legion of Valor, Naval Order of the United States, National Capital, and National Commander, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines Association.

•The Circle, Georgetown: The annual Sussex County Memorial Day Service will be at 1:30 p.m. today on The Circle in Georgetown.

The keynote speech will be delivered by retired U.S. Air Force Col. Richard Harper, a Vietnam veteran and former Dover Air Force Base commander.

•Sharon Hills, Dover: The Dover Air Force Base Honor Guard and Sharon Hills management will host their annual Memorial Day ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. Monday in the Garden of Honor of the Sharon Hills Cemetery, 2928 Sharon Hill Road, Dover.

•Milford Senior Center: The Milford Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday in the Milford Senior Center at 111 Park Ave., Milford.

Keynote speaker is Coast Guard Lt. Eric Hanson, the Marine Safety Detachment supervisor, at the Lewes station. The theme for this year’s event is “The Korean War.”

•Camden VFW: There will be a Memorial Day wreath presentation at 10 a.m. Monday at Camden Town Hall, 1783 Friends Way, Camden. A service at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3238 will begin at 11:30 a.m. at 166 Old Camden Road.

•Memorial Triangle, Dover: Delaware Veterans Post 2 and the American Legion Post 2 has moved its ceremony from Memorial Triangle to the Post 2 at 720 Pear Street, Dover, due to rain.

Col. D. Scott Durham, commander of the 512th Airlift Command, U.S. Air Force Reserve, will be the keynote speaker. Dover Air Force Base Honor Guard also will participate in the services. Following a roll call of Dover-area veterans who died in the last year, a wreath-laying ceremony will be provided by area veterans and civic organizations.

•Lewes parade: A Memorial Day parade will step off at 11 a.m. Monday, beginning at Shields Elementary School on Savannah Road, Lewes, and ending at Post 17 on Legion Road, Lewes. Post 17 will hold its annual Memorial Day Service at 3 p.m.

•Bethany Beach: The Town of Bethany Beach and officers and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234, will host a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bethany Beach boardwalk bandstand.

•Felton: Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Odd Fellows Memorial Park, Main Street and Railroad Avenue.

•Laurel: Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Laurel American Legion Post 19 post home, 12168 Laurel Road, Laurel (Del. 24, 1 mile east of U.S 13).

•Long Neck: Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday Dolby AMVETS Post 2, 32592 Long Neck Road (Del. 23), Long Neck area east of Millsboro.

•Millsboro: Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in pavilion at American Legion Post 28 post home, John J. Williams Highway (Del. 24), Oak Orchard area east of Millsboro. Food service insde after ceremony.

•Milton: The Milton VFW post will sponsor a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. Monday in Milton Memorial Park, Chandler Street, Milton.

•Rehoboth Beach: Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, east end of Rehoboth Avenue adjoining the Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, sponsored by the Rehoboth VFW Post 7447.

•Seaford: Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans’ Memorial in Kiwanis Park, Stein Highwy (Del. 20) and Atlanta Road, Seaford. (In case of inclement weather, ceremony will be held in Seaford High School.)

•Smyrna: A Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday in front of Smyrna Town Hall on Market Street Plaza.
