New license plate honors military veterans

U.S. military veterans who own a motor vehicle have a new option for celebrating their service to the nation.

Until now, all of Delaware’s military-themed license plates focused on specific honors, operations, or wars.

To address that shortcoming, State Rep. Charles Postles, R-Milford North, successfully authored legislation last year creating a new specialty plate for honorably discharged veterans. “Honorable military service, regardless of the location or nature of that service, is worthy of acknowledgement,” he said.

The first 20 of the new “MV” tags were delivered recently by the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  Dave Skocik, president of the Friends of Delaware Veterans, Inc., said those plates will be auctioned off at veteran-related events with the proceeds benefiting the Veterans Trust Fund.  Maintained by the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs, the fund provides one-time grants to honorably discharged veterans in financial emergencies.

“We appreciate the elected officials who proposed this, and the DMV folks who followed through on its implementation,” Mr. Skocik said.
