New Smyrna location adds to memorable year for i.g. Burton

MILFORD — The recent addition of a new i.g. Burton automobile dealership in Smyrna has helped mark a big year for the company, which is celebrating its 110th year of business.

The new Smyrna dealership joins a pair of other recent i.g. Burton acquisitions in Berlin, Maryland, which brings its total number of dealerships to six.

That’s huge for a family business that originally began selling cars from their general store in Millsboro more than a century ago.

The company now has locations in Milford, Seaford, Lewes and Smyrna. Berlin’s two dealerships are the first i.g. Burton stores to ever be located in Maryland. It is the largest business footprint in the company’s history.

In fact, i.g. Burton and Company Inc. is one of less than 40 dealerships in the nation to receive the Century Award from the NADA for being in the retail transportation business for at least 100 continuous years.

Charlie Burton, owner and fifth-generation Burton family member to operate the business, said there is no huge secret as to why the company has stayed around so long and expanded.

“It all boils down to people,” Mr. Burton said. “It always has and always will. I am very fortunate to have been able to surround myself with a lot of great people who want to grow and operate under our company philosophy.

“We get a lot of customer feedback through reviews and customer surveys, They make me proud because the feedback we get shows me that our heads and our hearts are in the right place with our business.”

Mr. Burton’s most recent acquisitions gives his company a wide array of options for customers to choose from.

“We have added Smyrna and Berlin to our roster,” he said. “By adding these locations, we now have Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram stores that cover from the Virginia line to the south all the way up to Wilmington at the north.

“And, by adding another Chevrolet store to the south in Berlin, we now have Chevrolet coverage in almost the same footprint.”

His dealerships feature new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Promaster, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter, Blue Bird Bus and pre-owned vehicles. They can be found online at igburton.com.

Mr. Burton said while the size of his family’s company has changed, offering nearly 2,000 vehicles at any given time, the company’s philosophy has not.

Mr. Burton said if a customer looks at the company crest that is placed on the back of every vehicle i.g. Burton sells, they will see the word “integrity” on it.

“It goes back to my grandfather – I.G. Burton who our company is named for,” he said. “He taught me long ago that earning and keeping a great reputation is based on your actions. Your actions demonstrate your integrity. He put that in our crest and we have kept it for a very long time. It is who we are.”
