DOVER – Delaware will continue to deal with winds, rain and flooding from the nor’easter today.
Ove the past three days, the nor’easter has dumped more than 4 inches of rain on the area and created impassable conditions on some roads, including Del. 1 between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach.
The region, however, is getting spared the double-whammy of a hurricane.
“The models have come into agreement that Hurricane Joaquin will stay well out to sea as it moves Northeast,” wrote meteorologist Brian Keane on the WBOC weather blog. “So although we’ll still have to deal with considerable flooding from this weekend’s Nor Easter, conditions could have been much worse.”
In Dover, fans were arriving for the AAA 400 race weekend.
Driver Sober 125 K&N Pro Series East races, already delayed from Friday to Saturday morning, was postponed again. No decision has been made yet on when it will be run.
The speedway still hopes to get the Hisense 200 NASCAR XFINITY Series race started at its originally scheduled time of 3:30 p.m. today.
The National Weather Service is reporting that the Dover area will have rain or drizzle between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. today with a high near 63. It will be windy with northeast winds 24-26 mph with gusts as high as 38 mph.
The forecast improves somewhat for Sunday with dizzle or light rain in the morning and slight chance of rain in the afternoon.
Monday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and much calmer winds.
DelDOT reported Saturday morning that the strong northeast winds blowing into Delaware continue to hold water in the state’s inland bays. The last 24-hour average sustained wind speed at the Indian River Inlet Bridge was 42 mph.
A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday and 30 mph winds along the coast are forecast to remain into Monday afternoon.
“This means various roads that have been closed during the storm are likely to see high water until Sunday evening,” wrote spokesman Jim Westhoff of DelDOT in a Saturday morning report. “These roads will be reopened as it becomes safe to do so.”
