Police identify Hartly-area couple found dead in home

HARTLY — An elderly couple was publicly identified the day after being found dead in what police said was a suspected murder/suicide at their residence in the 4000 block of Arthursville Road.

John James, 87, and his wife Mary, 81, were located during a Delaware State Police welfare check initially reported by a family member at approximately 11:27 a.m. Tuesday, spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Police did not initially disclose their identity pending notification of next of kin.

The late couple’s bodies were transferred to the Division of Forensic Science for autopsies to determine the manner and cause of death.
The State Police Homicide Unit continued to investigate Wednesday the incident, Cpl. Jaffe said.

“At this time, there is no concerns for safety in the surrounding area,” she said.

On Tuesday, Hartly Elementary School went into lockdown mode as a precautionary measure due to police investigating the nearby situation, a Capital School District spokeswoman said.
