Police lead funeral procession for slain correctional officer

FREDERICA — Frederica Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jerry Johnston  and Bowers Fire Company Chief Phillip W. Pennington, Sr. led a group of volunteer firefighters saluting the hearse carrying the body of Lt. Steven Floyd of the Delaware Department of Correction Saturday.

The firefighters gathered at the Frederica overpass at Del. 1 near Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery where the burial was held.

Mourners paid last respects to the 47-year-old Lt. Floyd Saturday during services at Delaware State University.

He was found dead Feb, 2 after a hostage standoff at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna. Three other DOC workers were taken hostage but survived the ordeal. No criminal charges have been filed in the homicide case, but an investigation continues at the prison.
