State offices not closing for Bush funeral

DOVER — Gov. John Carney has announced that the state government will not be closed today for former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral.

However, he urged managers “to accommodate state employees who would like to watch President Bush’s memorial service, as long as it does not interfere with time-sensitive state business.”

President Trump has declared today a national day of mourning, closing federal offices.

Also, Maryland state government offices will be closed today.

President Bush, a Republican who served as the nation’s 41st president from 1989 to 1993, died Friday at age 94. He was the oldest ex-president in history and the first to die since Gerald Ford in 2006.

“His memory and legacy of service should inspire all of us to find new ways to give back, to serve our neighbors and fellow Americans,” Gov. Carney, a Democrat, said in an email to state employees.

The funeral will take place at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Delaware employees who wish to watch the services should work with their higher-ups to determine where it will be broadcast in their offices.

While there won’t be closures this time, Delaware government has shut down in the past for state funerals: In addition to closing for President Ford in 2006, some state offices remained temporarily empty for the ceremonies honoring former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan, in 1969, 1973 and 2004, respectively.

Some facilities and planned events Dover Air Force Base will have modified hours or keep their doors shut today.
