Traffic stop leads to arrest of Laurel man on drug charges

DAGSBORO –Delaware State Police report the arrest 24-year-old Devontay D. Jones of Laurel on multiple drug related offenses following a traffic stop near Dagsboro Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:26 p.m. April 19 when a trooper on routine patrol observed a gray, Chevy Trailblazer run a stop sign at the intersection of E. Diamond Street and Power Plant Road in Dagsboro, state police spokesman Master Cpl. Michael Austin said.

The trooper stopped the vehicle on Adams Road, just south of Bunting Road. Upon contacting Jones, the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, the trooper detected odor of marijuana inside the vehicle.

A subsequent search of Jones’ person and the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 279 baggies of heroin, with a total weight of 1.953 grams, 1.38 grams of marijuana, and $1,771 in suspected drug proceeds, according to Cpl. Austin.

Jones was taken in to custody without incident and transported to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following: Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance; Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 1 Quantity; Maintaining a Drug Property; Tampering with Physical Evidence; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (3 counts);  Possession of Marijuana and Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign.

Jones was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $35,500 secured bail, Cpl. Austin said.
