Commentary: Joe Biden gets a big dose of liberal backlash

Civility is officially dead within the Democratic Party.

Former Vice President Joe Biden recently drew the ire of liberal activists when he asserted that current Vice President Mike Pence is “a decent guy” during an event in Omaha, Nebraska.

Speaking of Pence’s trip to the Munich Security Conference, where the global elites gave President Trump’s right hand man an icy reception, Biden said, “The fact of the matter is, it was followed on by a guy who’s a decent guy, our vice president, who stood before this group of allies and leaders and said, ‘I’m here on behalf of President Trump’ and there was dead silence. Dead silence.”

In his well-intentioned effort to stand up for American leadership on the world stage, Biden committed the number one “no-no” in the far-left rule book — giving even modest praise to a Republican.

Biden referring to Pence as a “decent guy” caused the liberal left — especially on Twitter — to go insane. Cynthia Nixon, an actress and unsuccessful candidate for governor in New York, tweeted, “@JoeBiden you’ve just called America’s most anti-LGBT elected leader ‘a decent guy.’ Please consider how this falls on the ears of our community.”

Biden quickly responded to Nixon, offering a mea culpa to her and anyone else who may have been offended by his decision to treat a political opponent with respect.

“You’re right, Cynthia,” he wrote. “I was making a point in a foreign policy context, that under normal circumstances a Vice President wouldn’t be given a silent reaction on the world stage… But there is nothing decent about being anti-LGBTQ rights, and that includes the Vice President.”

Nixon acknowledged the response, but insisted that Pence does not deserve to be called “decent” in any context.

For the record, having met Vice President Pence on several occasions and worked with the pro-life caucus when he was a Congressman, I found him to be not only a decent and moral man, but also a genuinely good person

The ground rules have now been set for the Democratic presidential primaries — not one positive word can be uttered about anyone on the other side of the aisle.

The Democratic base no longer considers Republicans to be merely political opponents, but rather monsters who must be defeated in all-out war. Any Democratic candidate or official who questions that notion will face the wrath of radical liberal activists.

Shortly after he called Pence “a decent guy,” a CNN focus group roundly rejected Biden as a potential 2020 presidential candidate, with none of the six panelists indicating that they would like to see him enter the race.

“I don’t think Joe Biden represents that new thing that we need,” one of the Democratic voters revealingly opined. “We need a new economy, we need new politics, and we need someone different.”

Joe Biden has become the first target of the 2020 election cycle political correctness watchdogs on the left as the Democrats continue to wage war against civility, but he certainly won’t be the last.
