Commentary: Nanticoke takes ‘positive step’ with affiliation

For over 65 years, Nanticoke Health Services has focused on its mission of providing comprehensive health-care services to positively impact quality of life in our community. Over the past 10 years, the compassion, dedication and expertise of our medical staff, employees and volunteers have worked to make Nanticoke a nationally recognized health-care provider for both its patient safety and patient experience. Today, Nanticoke is a leader providing high-quality, patient-centered, cost-effective care to the people of western Sussex County.

Today many, many factors are impacting health care and independent community hospitals must adopt new models of care to continue to deliver quality outcomes and outstanding patient experiences, while increasing efficiencies and reducing cost.

Across the U.S., there has been a significant increase in affiliations and partnerships, allowing hospitals like ours to remain a key component in their local communities while providing additional resources for long-term sustainability and growth.

More than a year ago — acknowledging the changing health-care environment and being in a strong financial position — the Nanticoke Health Services Board of Directors began looking at the feasibility of an affiliation that allows us to remain a strong, locally focused, comprehensive care system. This evaluation included criteria for maintaining our mission, vision and culture, helping us promote the health and well-being of our community, and advancing Nanticoke for future generations.

With all of this in mind, our board has voted to enter into negotiations to affiliate with Peninsula Regional Health System in Salisbury, Maryland. Details of the organizational and operational structure of this affiliation will be worked out as we move forward.

This has been a thorough and thoughtful process. We considered a number of local, regional and national organizations that were interested in affiliating with us. Peninsula Regional is a cultural match and shares our vision of ensuring that western Sussex County residents continue to benefit from our continuum of care and community health programs. This was a very important part of our considerations.

This is an exciting time for Nanticoke, and we envision a promising future. This affiliation is a positive step for our health system and local economy. It will allow additional investment in services we provide, while giving our patients and area residents access to specialty care and support programs currently available through Peninsula Regional.
