LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trump Jr. a chip off the old block?

For some time I have respected the members of President Donald Trump’s family for being quietly effective in their respective roles as presidential advisers (Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner) and business “custodian” (Donald Trump Jr).

However, evidence now shows that Trump Jr and Kushner, while quiet, have been up to their necks in political intrigue especially regarding their contacts with Russian operatives during Trump Sr.’s presidential campaign.

Trump Sr’s assertions that Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign through the Trump organization is “fake news” and the “greatest witch hunt in history” have been blown up by the recent release of Trump Jr’s emails.

Trump Jr’s email “threads” revealed:

• Trump Jr.’s meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya was not to discuss repeal of a U.S. law which triggered Vladimir Putin’s retaliatory ban on American adoption of Russian children as Trump Jr. had claimed only two days earlier

• Trump’s meeting with the Russian lawyer was in response to an email from a go-between for Russian oligarch Aras Agalarov — a close Putin associate

• In the email there was an offer from a top Russian prosecutor “to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.”

• Trump Jr. rather gleefully assented to the meeting saying, ”I love it“

• Unlike what would happen at a low-level meeting, Trump Jr. involved and brought the campaign’s biggest guns (campaign chairman Paul Manafort and brother-in-law Kushner) with him

Does Trump Jr. believe all is fair in love, war, business and politics? Does he know a presidential campaign is subject to laws? Offers from a foreign government to provide dirt on Hillary Clinton’s campaign for political gain should have been met with an immediate referral to the FBI by Trump Jr.

Instead Trump Jr., in typical Trump Sr style, decided to go for it; then lie about it; then obfuscate it. No wonder the Trumps hate the media. Those pesky little rascals seek, find and publicize the facts which in this case are very difficult to refute.

While there has been a lot of smoke about potential involvement of the Trump campaign with the Russians, now there is fire. Just how much fire there is has yet to be determined.

We the people will continue to watch, listen and evaluate the facts and import of these issues.
