LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Telephone solicitors not from Delaware fire companies

The Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, in conjunction with the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, is advising residents and businesses throughout Delaware regarding a telephone campaign currently soliciting donations for a “firefighters’ relief fund.”

This group is not associated with, nor do they in any way represent Delaware’s fire service and its more than 7,000 members statewide.

As is often the case, these phony solicitors are able to use a local phone number to display on the caller ID of the recipient’s telephone, which can lead people to believe that the caller is a local individual or group.
Delaware Fire, Rescue and EMS organizations do not solicit donations over the telephone, nor do they contact residents or businesses regarding fire prevention or other matters by telephone.

If you receive such a call, hang up. Above all else, do not make a donation to anyone claiming to represent Delaware firefighters who asks for money over the telephone.

Delaware’s fire companies do request the support of residents and businesses through annual fund drive campaigns and greatly appreciate the support of our neighbors who contribute to their local volunteer fire companies.

The Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association represents the members of the 21 volunteer fire companies and two ambulance companies serving Sussex County.
