Letter to the Editor: Why people come to Delaware

It’s just my opinion and it’s probably what brought me here, I could’ve moved to any state in the union, I’m a native of the Northeast born in Pennsylvania, I worked in the construction and service industry in the tri-state area for over 30 years.

And as a kid my parents brought us down to Lewes to vacation more than any other place we ever visited, it was my understanding that we could went any place to vacation, we were close to New Jersey could’ve went to the Jersey beaches, most of them ware the same overcrowded turned into tourist traps, but Delaware and in particular Lewes, was like going back to Mayberry. This was the attraction of Delaware!

Other beachfront communities built high-rises and condominiums up and down the coast, charging for a walk on the beach and overcharging you for parking your car. But Delaware was like going to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. You went back in time to a peaceful and a desirable community. It wasn’t overcrowded, there was no pushing and shoving, it was a heavenly place to visit.

It would be a shame if the same type of greedy people commercialized Delaware to the point that it would be unrecognizable from New Jersey, Virginia Beach, South Carolina or just another place that is exactly the same.

In my opinion Delaware’s rural hometown feel is what makes it a uniquely special place on earth. Please do not turn into a giant Walmart, amusement park or a casino. Because at that point it wouldn’t really matter where you go, because all places would be the same.
