Santa in Dover

Instead of the Dover Fire Department bringing Kris Kringle through the streets of the city this year, the 2018 Operation Santa will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 15 at Dover Fire Department’s headquarters at 103 S. Governors Ave. The move to the downtown location was made “due to all of the apparent confusion and statements that were made over the past few years that Santa either missed neighborhoods, certain streets or people stating that they were not home when Santa came through …,” according to a DFD Facebook post.

• Apparently the Dover (Fire Department) has chosen to play Scrooge rather than warm the hearts of children. Bah, humbug! — Margaret McDermott

• This is sad. It’s such a great tradition. If you aren’t home, that’s just tough luck. I’m grateful we live in Magnolia and they still do it! — Devon Wrede Hoerner

• Santa rides the fire truck, people aren’t happy, Santa is at the fire house, people aren’t happy. — Carl Troubetaris

Business as usual

Gov. John Carney announced Tuesday the state government would not be closed Wednesday for former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral. However, he urged managers “to accommodate state employees who would like to watch President Bush’s memorial service, as long as it does not interfere with time-sensitive state business.”

• The most partisan governor in the United States wants us all to get along, as long as it’s his way. — Bob Skuse

• Oh come on. Everyone nay-saying this would be up in arms if the state offices had closed and be saying something like, “Sure all those tax dollars going up in smoke.”

There’s not one legitimate reason for Delaware state offices to have closed today; I say that as someone who collects his pay from tax revenues. For that matter, there’s not much of a reason for the federal government to have shut down today, other than the logistics of a president’s funeral in one of the worst cities for traffic. Everyone just take a breath. I’m not really the biggest fan of Carney, but this is not a big deal. — Jeff Haycraft
