SOUND OFF DELAWARE: Dover Post Office on the move

Dover’s landmark 55 Loockerman Plaza post office location for five decades will be vacated in a couple of years, officials said Friday. The current lease with the city expires in 2020.

• Keep in mind that the city’s building on Reed Street and the City Hall are aging and really need to be rebuilt to accommodate changes in needs over the decades (continuing to repair the current ones still doesn’t solve the efficiency problem but is expensive). Similarly, I don’t believe 55 Loockerman Plaza is suitable for the USPS which is shipping more and more packages and adding routes as the population increases and they need more space (they’re currently parking some trucks on the street). I don’t see how they can stay in downtown with the available space as a hub. Maybe a smaller downtown presence mixed with a large facility in the old Value City building. — Jonathan Contant

• Sears at the mall is closing. Lots of vacant property around Dover that they could look at with room to expand. — Bruce Caballero

• Maybe the ACME or Toys R Us locations. Especially Acme. A lot of parking there. — Benjamin Black

• They need a new place for sure. — Dennis Orlando Jr.

• Too bad there couldn’t be a small drop off/PO Box location downtown with the operations stuff moved to a different location. — Holly Overmyer

• We must be very, very careful. The old guard will just not have the PO moving out of downtown to enhance and improve efficiency not to mention parking, getting in and out. Changes for the good would just be a silly idea. And don’t even start with the downtown residents getting to it. Almost everybody drives there unless you work in a nearby state office and if they don’t, learn how to ride a bus. — Debby Slaughter Messina

• Value City— great idea with a small location downtown for stamps, shipping. Lockerman Exchange would be a great location for satellite location. — Patti Smith

• After the monstrous public library was placed in current location, I believe it was a matter of time that the post office would need to be moved. Should go to Bay Road to make it easier for parking. — D Marie Towey-Lamos
