Speak Out: Biden announces presidential run

Former vice president Joe Biden, 76, who posted his video on Twitter, became an instant front-runner alongside Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, when he announced his run for U.S. president Thursday.

Among Democrats, Vice President Biden has unmatched international and legislative experience, and he is among the best-known faces in U.S. politics. He quickly racked up endorsements on Thursday morning, becoming the first Democrat running for president with the backing of more than one U.S. senator.

Still, he must compete in a field that now spans at least 20 Democrats and has been celebrated for its racial and gender diversity. As an older white man with occasionally centrist views, he has to prove he’s not out of step with his party.

• Joe Biden has a lot of explaining to do. He can start by telling us his credentials of his “working class” experience, not of his family…him. — Dave McGuigan

• I just hope the DNC doesn’t do the same thing to Bernie with Joe that they did with Hillary. — Gary Greer

•They will. Too many mediocre folks in the Democratic primary now. It’ll split all the votes when we should just be uniting behind Bernie. — Danielle Levredge

•Neither Sanders or Biden is Obama, the DNC or CNN and MSNBC choice. So they are out. If Obama was supporting Joe he would have stated it. Instead of waiting until after the primary election. — Bob Smith

• A Biden/Sanders ticket in the future? — Aaron Mobley

• No to Joe. He’ll put us all back in chains…slaves to Obamacare being taxed to death! — Howard Gaines III

• He’d be 78 if elected, 82 at the end of his first term, and 86 if he made it through a second. — Nick Boggs

• Another person trying to take us back to the Obama years. Look forward not backwards Go Trump. — David Quigley

• Oh! Gosh He does not give up! — Marie Sneed

• Isn’t he too old? I seem to recall when John McCain ran, the left was screaming about “being one heartbeat away” referring to his old age. Thanks for the laugh, Lunch Bucket Joe, but you’ve been attempting this for what, four decades now? Time to hang up the hat. — Lisa Rodriguez

• This is not going to be a cake walk for Donald Trump. It’s going to be a very tough race; Democrats think Trump is the antiChrist, so after the dust settles from their primary war, they’re all going to come home and support their nominee regardless of who it is. — John Daliani

• He’s the best of the bunch, but that’s not saying a whole lot! Today’s liberals scare me. Way too radical and bordering on psychotic. — Kendall Dixon

• Hope he chooses a female VP. — Rhonda Tyndall
