Speak Out: Delaware gun proposals

When lawmakers return to Legislative Hall Tuesday after a two-week break, they’ll be confronting a host of issues. Few, if any, will spark more debate and receive more attention than a handful of gun control proposals.

To supporters, the proposals are common-sense ideas that could benefit public safety without unreasonably restricting gun access. Opponents, naturally, see them quite differently, arguing the bills are unconstitutional, unnecessary and unfair, and many feel they even verge on tyranny.

• We need these common sense gun control laws to be passed. — Bradley Skelcher

• Can you please explain how any of these bills will keep guns out of the hands of criminals? Can u explain why our AG drops 71% of all gun-related charges against criminals in this state? Why are you in support of more laws, which only affect law-abiding citizens, when the current laws that are in place are not enforced? I’m not being disrespectful, I’m being serious. I’d like to understand why some think that these laws will make any difference to the crime rates in this state. — Jackie Veal Cates

• There is nothing “common sense” about any of these bills. The only common sense is that none of them will stop crime in fact it will make criminals out of law abiding sane gun owners. These idiots need to be voted out of office ASAP. — Doug Drummond

• Zero benefit to “public safety” as the bills would only apply to lawful citizens. Start locking up the crack heads, meth heads, dopers and other criminals who use a weapon while committing a crime. Many of them get a slap on the wrist and told they are bad boys (or girls) then walk. The permit system is a money trap pure and simple. Passing laws that supposedly will impact trouble in crime-ridden Wilmington and Dover become Draconian for the rest of the state. The whole thing is more socialist globalist Democrats taking away the peoples rights or money which they do excel doing. It’s also no about gun control but rather people control. — Warren Avis

• If the government is allowed to control even one aspect of our Second amendment, it is all over. They want to make it a felony to disobey their gun bills so that they can take away our guns, period. If you have committed a felony, you cannot possess a firearm. Don’t let this happen. Vote the people out that want to add gun control to the laws.— Teresa Herbert

• Nobody uses the 2A for it’s intended purpose — so what’s the big deal anyway? It’s not like anyone here has ever fought tyranny and had to exercise their right. You just sign petitions and stuff and beg for your representative to not pass one more law restricting you (which they probably do anyway) all while hiding what you can from the enforcers of these newfound policies. Americans are funny people. — Justin Neal Capps

• It has less to do with the 2nd amendment and more to do with control. That is why we have a Constitution and Bill of Rights to protect our American citizens and checks and balances in government to thwart these types of actions that jeopardize our freedoms set forth by our founding fathers. — Chuck Clifton
