Speak Out: ‘Don’t meddle in the election’

With a smirk and a finger point, President Donald Trump dryly told Russia’s Vladimir Putin “Don’t meddle in the election” in their first meeting since the special counsel concluded that Moscow extensively interfered in the 2016 presidential campaign on Friday.

Democrats on Capitol Hill were quick to criticize the president, saying he was making light of Russian meddling in the election. It was the two leaders’ first meeting since special counsel Robert Mueller said that while Moscow intervened, he could not establish a criminal conspiracy between Russia and the Trump campaign.

• Democrats have no sense of humor? Breaking!!! News at 11!! — Chris Werner

• Since when is a hostile foreign power meddling into an American election a joke? — Gary Greer

• I seem to remember Obama saying there was no way a foreign power could affect our elections in any meaningful way, for the simple reason our elections are so decentralized. He was right. — Matt Bucher

• It’s not funny when the leader of the free world refuses to take seriously the fact that he would not be president today had it not been for Russian meddling in our elections! — Joe Bernard

• Why are people not disturbed by Putin using almost identical words to describe immigrants. Putin, “kill, plunder and rape with impunity”. Except Trump would not use the word impunity for obvious reasons. — Gerry Boyle

• How anyone can consider Russia interfering with our election process a joke is beyond me. Thats about as un-American as you can get without being a member of the Trump family. — Becca Brown

• Hillary Clinton lost because she’s a corrupt woman. Trump won because he was a better choice. If she hadn’t stole the Democratic nominee from Bernie Sanders it might have been Bernie that lost. Even though the Russians interfered with our elections I believe they didn’t affect the minds of most Americans in that race and this time around the Democrats are not offering any candidate that’s a good choice either so my guess they lose by a landslide, but I will make a prediction they will say Russia interfered again. — Robert Wright

• You do realize more people voted for Hillary, right? Corrupt or not, most of the country voted for her. — Ian Kowalewski

•Impeach Trump. It is our business what he says to Putin. — Elizabeth Kenney

• People need to just stop. Most of my friends and acquaintances can come to an agreement and understanding about most concepts (even abortion and immigration). Americans need to wake up. Take a really good look at your politicians and ask yourselves what has the current local politicians done and how’s it affecting my town, city and state? We can certainly say in Delaware our current government is a complete waste! We have failing schools, horrible crime and an out of control opioid epidemic. All politics are local! Stop blaming each other and START blaming your idiotic politicians! — Janet Carey Smith
