Speak Out: Erasing history?

Readers reacted to recent letter to the editor by Jack Heavner challenging a previous letter which said withdrawing funds from the Georgetown Historical Society because of a display which contains a Confederate flag was “erasing history.”

•Perhaps Mr. Heavner is unaware that Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine veterans equal to U.S. veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. If you want to fall back on why any government agency spends money recklessly, start with welfare benefits to illegal aliens or perhaps spending a quarter million dollars on an imagined recreation of a building that might have stood on The Green in Dover. Socialist Democrats would be wise to avoid claiming conservatives waste money. This column doesn’t give me enough space to list all the money Democrats have frittered away. —George Roof

• No one is saying the monument and flag has to be removed. I agree that taxpayers should not support this. If folks are so passionate about the issue, donate. — Joe Cappadonna

• I assume you feel the government should also not support many other agencies. Like National Public Radio/TV, numerous colleges, just about anything that claims to be, “non-profit”. Or, one of my favorite, Planned Parenthood. — Dennis Mehrenberg

• I agree with Mr. Heavner. Further, the glorification of the Confederacy is associated with the de-facto re-enslavement of black people in the South, the Klan, and other really ugly stuff. Uglier even than Trumpism. —Alan Muller

• This letter talks about “a monument to a country who waged a war against our own”. Do you know anything about the Civil War? This is your first major talking point and it’s wrong, then the letter goes downhill from there. — Cortney Fisher

• Then you’ll be supporting the rounding up and deportation of all illegal aliens, and forcing all able bodied welfare recipients to work 40 hours a week, right? Because “They should find a way to fund themselves instead of leaching off the government” One last thing…..the Democrats didn’t flip. They just make the chains of slavery out of free stuff. — Steel Ovaries

• Really? 1932? Have you ever heard of Hillary Clinton’s mentor Senator Robert Byrd? The Democrat Party has always been the ones holding the noose around the black man’s neck. And, they are still doing it today. — Bob Beckman
