Speak Out: Guns in America

Readers recently reacted to a commentary by Matt Lenzini headlined “Despite political posturing, guns are here to stay.”

• Great letter. I have always maintained the lack of parenting over the last 30-40 years is a primary cause. Then toss in all the ADHD drugs and the other drugs the parents and doctors giving to kids is a major contributor. Then toss in some good liberalization, the sissifying and lack of discipline. Schools no longer discipline students and parents blame everyone but the kids for their problems. Parents that are well off enough that both parents don’t need to work still do for greed purposes and neglect their children and give them anything they want because they feel guilty for not being there raising their children. That’s why you can’t find a kid today to mow grass or shovel snow. — Bob Hice

•Bingo. Way too much focus on HOW and none on why. — Steve Savini

•The vast majority of the mentally ill are not violent, but the vast majority of the mass killers are mentally ill, by definition. The problem is making the distinction beforehand. “To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the law abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless.” – Lysander Spooner — Jim Price

• “What emotions are driving people to commit these terrible crimes? That is the only way we will ever find a solution.” Answer: Angry white men with easy access to firearms. — Carol Townsend

• You having been born in Chicago, , I’d like you to take a look at the number of shootings and gun violence in your home town and preach to us again about “Angry white men with easy access to firearms.” The issue goes well beyond racial boundaries. — Chris Birney

• What is your excuse for the angry black men who commit mass shootings? — Alex Fowler

• Guns aren’t the problem. A lack of morality is. — Howard Gaines III

• Guns are here to stay. Assault and combat weapons should be banned, no argument! — Joe Bernard

• If they are banned only the criminals will have them. — Jimmy Biggs

• Criminals are not the ones committing the mass murders with assault weapons. — Joe Bernard

• So mass shooters aren’t criminals? Mass shooters are mentally ill, like this article perfectly articulates. — Laura Beth

• Yes, guns are here to stay, but we can regulate them. — Susan Janis
