Speak Out: Trump and gun rights

President Donald Trump vowed to fight for gun rights as he addressed the National Rifle Association on Friday and implored members of the group — struggling to maintain its influence — to rally behind his re-election bid.

Speaking to the group for his third straight year, Trump declared himself a “champion for the Second Amendment.”

“It’s under assault,” he said of the constitutional right to bear arms. “But not while we’re here.”

And he told the thousands in the crowd: “You better get out there and vote,” saying of the 2020 election, “It seems like it’s a long ways away. It’s not.”

• Unless he doesn’t. As in the bump stock case. Still, no better choice for gun owners. — Jim Price

• I beg to differ re Dems and gun rights and illegal aliens. Speaking for myself, I respect the 2nd Amendment regarding the right to own a gun but there is no need for assault weapons outside of the military or SWAT. As for immigration, I am not for open borders but for a reasonable process for entry into our country. — Francine Stassa Giles

• Republicans exaggerate everything to make it look so bad. We want equality and freedom and they want biblically based Sharia law. — Mel Barnhart

• You do not respect the 2A if you support banning certain firearms. The right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed. As for immigration Republicans are not against immigration at all. They want people to come in the right way, legally and documented. Unlike the Democrats who want people, criminals and traffickers, to flow across the border freely. — Vernon Weaver

• It’s already illegal for either if convicted to possess firearms. Come back with some more and I’ll help educate you on what is and isn’t legal. — Kevin Kilpatrick

• If they want guns, they would get them from the black market. What do you want? All guns gone from the hunters? Then whose left with guns? The criminals. Then what?? — Margie Schafferman Allen

• We already do have checks and balances and background checks, but unfortunately those laws are not always enforced. — Maureen McCartan Harris

• Good! I love that he stands up for Americans’ rights! It’s about time we had a president that loves his country! — Tina Husfelt

• Start right here in Delaware helping us fight the ridiculous legislation. — Richard Miller

• Why wouldn’t he? The NRA has bought him! — Jerry Brainard

• Of course, when Russia has funneled money to Trump through the NRA. Must do both their bidding to pay them back. That is how it works. Duh. — Jim Kelley

• Thank you President Trump for standing up for law-abiding citizens’ 2nd Amendment constitutional rights! — Steven Hillriegel

• NRA can’t get out of its own way right now. — Paul Eichler
