6 female work crew inmates hospitalized in suspected overdose in Sussex

GEORGETOWN — Six female inmates were administered Narcan and transported to the hospital after suspected drug overdoses while on a work crew Thursday afternoon.

The incident began at 2:45 p.m. when the Sussex Community Corrections Center inmates were discovered suffering from potential overdoses while doing community service, according to the Delaware Department of Correction. DOC medical and security staff applied treatment, along with arriving EMS.

The inmates were taken to an outside hospital for further evaluation, treated and released. The DOC said they were then transferred to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle.

Authorities said charges are pending. The substance involved was not immediately known and Delaware State Police testing was underway, and the source of the drugs was under investigation.

The DOC said it launched an internal probe as well as well.

The Milton Fire Department Inc. Station 85’s Facebook page reported that EMS crews from Georgetown EMS/Station 93, Millsboro Fire Company 83, Ellendale Fire Company 75, Mid Sussex Rescue Squad Inc. 91, Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Department 73, and Sussex County EMS went to the scene at the Sussex Correctional Institution’s Violation of Parole office.
