DOVER — An early morning crash involving two trucks shut down Del. 1 near Dover Air Force Base for  about six hours Thursday, according to Delaware State Police.

The incident happened 4:54 a.m. Thursday as William L. Underwood, 42 of Rising Sun, Maryland, was operating a 2011 Peterbilt dump truck loaded with stone, southbound on Del. 1. He was in the right lane approaching Exit 93 (Dover AFB Main Gate).  According to police, Mr. Underwood’s attention was distracted momentarily inside the cab and the truck allegedly drifted to the right shoulder where it struck the trailer portion of a 2007 International tractor trailer illegally parked underneath the overpass.

Police said Mr. Underwood was properly restrained and was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Kent General Bayhealth Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.  He was cited for inattentive driving.

Abdulaziz Adjintettey, 33 of Philadelphia, was in the sleeper portion of the tractor-trailer truck during the collision and was uninjured.  He was cited for parking in a no stopping, standing or parking zone.

Del. 1 in the area of Exit 93 was closed for about six hours while the crash was investigated and crews worked to clean up the debris. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control also responded to assist with the diesel fuel spill clean-up from the dump truck.
