Bicyclist dies in Bethany Beach crash

BETHANY BEACH — An 85-year-old Bethany Beach man died when his bicycle was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Coastal Highway and Pennsylvania Avenue, authorities said.

Ronald W. Smith was initially transported to Beebe Medical Center and then transferred to Christiana Hospital where he died from injuries, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

According to police, Mr. Smith’s bike was waiting to cross over the northbound lanes of Coastal Highway when struck by a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 70-year-old Seaford man. The driver remained at the scene and was not injured.

DSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Authorities asked that anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Troop 7, Sgt. Mendez at 703-3269.
