Bicyclist killed in Dover crash

DOVER — A Dover woman was killed early Sunday when she was hit on a motorized bicycle by a pickup truck on U.S. 13 in Dover.

The incident occurred around 2:08 a.m. as Mildred A. Steele, 23, of Dover, was operating a Motorized Huffy bicycle northbound in the left lane of North DuPont Highway (U.S. 13) approaching the intersection of West Denneys Road, said Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier.

Nicholas J. Stonesifer, 21, of Dover, was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westbound on West Denneys Road and was stopped at the light at the intersection with U.S.13 northbound, Cpl. Fournier said.

When the light for West Denneys Road turned green, the pickup truck entered into the intersection and struck the front of the bicyclist who was continuing northbound through the red light on U.S 13. After impact, the bicyclist was ejected onto the roadway on the northwest corner of the intersection. The pickup truck came to a controlled stop in the parking lot of Blue Hen Collision Express, Cpl. Fournier said.

Ms. Steele, who was not wearing a helmet or reflective clothing, was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Mr. Stonesifer was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. U.S.13 northbound at West Denneys Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
