Bicyclist killed in Seaford crash identified

SEAFORD — Delaware State Police have identified the name of the individual who was killed in a crash on Friday on Sussex Highway just north of Tharp Road as 56-year-old Jorge Melendez Claudio of Greenwood.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:52 p.m. when a 2016 Dodge Ram pick-up truck was traveling northbound on Sussex Highway just north of Tharp Road in the right lane, directly across from Rommel Harley-Davidson.

Mr. Claudio, on bicycle, was traveling northbound on the northbound shoulder, just off the edge of the right travel lane. Delaware State Police say it appears that the truck drifted onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the bicycle. The impact caused the bicyclist to project forward and come to a final rest on the northbound shoulder.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 29-year-old male from Georgetown was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment does not appear to be a factor on his behalf.

Police say Mr. Claudio was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford where he was pronounced deceased.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
